Danielle’s Resume Guide to Getting the Job

Looking for a career change in 2020? Here are some helpful resume tips from my friend and experienced recruiter, Danielle Tucker!

As a recruiter working on 10+ open reqs at once, I review hundreds of resumes a week. I can't spend a lot of time thoroughly reading every bullet point, so the 3 things I look at first are:

  • Format! Make sure your resume looks nice. Take some time to fit everything onto 1-2 pages (preferably 1). Standardize it so each item (title, company, dates, etc.) matches the others. If you can, brighten up my day by adding in a pop of color or making it look clean. PLEASE PDF.

  • Companies and Titles. I will briefly browse the companies you've worked at and corresponding titles. Are they in line with the job you're applying to? If not, I recommend adding in a professional bio / summary at the top that is 3-5 sentences outlining your strengths and what type of role you're looking for (and that role better be in line with the job you're applying to...).

  • First bullet points. I'll read the first bullet point under every job you've had. Does it capture your role and biggest accomplishment during your time there? Is it well written? Does it speak to specific accomplishments? Measurable results? If you're answer is yes, then great!

If you've checked these three buckets, I'll likely have already moved your resume to recruiter screen stage. Or I'll take a couple more minutes to read your resume in depth and a cover letter (if you sent one in).
